Viking offers new system for protecting freezer and cold storage environments

May 5, 2004—The Viking Corporation, a provider of fixed fire protection devices, has announced a new system for protecting freezer and cold storage environments. This new system, utilizing Vikings K25 ESFR Pendent Sprinklers (VK510) and a pre-mix of propylene glycol antifreeze and water, can enhance flexibility by eliminating in-rack sprinklers in certain applications. Testing has been completed, and UL Listing for the complete system is pending.

Vikings K25 Propylene Glycol System protects up to Class II Storage Commodities in buildings up to 40 feet (12,2 m) high with racked storage up to 35 feet (10,7 m). The system is listed with 165 F (74 C) Viking K25 ESFR Sprinklers (VK510). Intermediate temperature sprinklers rated to 205 F (96 C) may be applied as referenced in NFPA 13 for installation in close proximity to heat sources. The system requires a minimum starting pressure of 40 psi (278 kPa) and has a maximum volume of antifreeze solution per system of 1100 gallons (4163 liters).

The Viking K25 Propylene Glycol System provides a cost-effective alternative to in-rack sprinkler systems for protecting storage environments as cold as 23 F (-30.6 C). In addition to having a positive impact on total installed cost, the system is also far less vulnerable to damage than traditional in-rack sprinklers.
